We had a fabulous opportunity to catch up with Kuwait’s most popular DJ. Known for his awesome evening mixes on Marina FM 88.8, Miro Minasian a.k.a DJ X has been around Kuwait’s EDM scene (or so to speak), for a long time now. Miro was kind enough to give us a tour of the Marina FM management studios and also tell us about the equipment he uses . (check out the video)
Here is text version of the interview:
So how did it all begin?
I always showed love and passion to music as a child and would always be playing it loud whether at home, in the car or carrying my headphones everywhere. this passion of mine turned into a profession and built a very strong connection with music.
Where did the name DJ “X” come from?
I was a drummer of a local band and the same time i liked playing keyboard at the age of 16 i had my first professional keyboard labeled “X” where i produced my first remix on. not too long after that i started dj-ing at gigs at schools and carnivals using a regular pc and i had to pick a nickname so that’s where i had my inspiration of calling myself DJ X.
How did you transform from playing Hip Hop to House and club music?
Basically My roots were always hip hop but when i attended ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) for the first time i enjoyed the music and shared the same love which made me get addicted to it. generally house is dance-based music characterized by drum
machines and synthesized melodies. i was feeling nothing but the beats which influenced me and made this natural transition to a new futuristic music scene.

What is it like DJ-ing from a major radio station in Kuwait?
Playing at a radio station is a completely different level. u have a huge number of listeners with different tastes of music, so u make sure your picking the right songs and playing nothing but hits that people want to hear and u always wanna be up to date with the content that is being aired. It requires a lot of hard work and effort to ensure that every listener is satisfied and is enjoying the music being broadcasted.
Have you played at gigs outside Kuwait?
Yes i have played in Armenia and Lebanon.
Which artists inspire you?
I’m a very big fan of Afrojack but also on top of the line are David Guetta, Tiesto, Avicii, Chuckie, Nicky Romero, Armin Van Buuren, Hardwell, Swedish House Mafia, Sidney Samson, Skrillex and others.
Out of all tracks you have, which one “never fails”?
The tune that never fails is definitely Levels By Avicii which was also the tune of the year 2010.
Tell us about the equipment you use
I’m currently using the cdj 2000, djm 900 nexus mixer and the rmx1000 which are designed by Pioneer. Pioneer dj equipment is the most professional dj gear available in the market becauseof its unique design and the incredible features that allows the dj be creative while mixing and spinning and its user friendly. its being used at the famous clubs and events worldwide.
What do you think of Kuwait’s EDM scene potential?
There is a significant development in the music industry in kuwait. there are more public musical events happening nowadays and one of the most amazing event was the presence of an international artist Ne-yo who had collaborations with the famous house djs/producers such as Afrojack and David Guetta.

What is your dream location to play at and why?
10-my dream location to play is “Tomorrowland” in Belgium which is is one of the largest electronic dance music festivals in the world and kicks off for 3 continuous days only every year and had an attraction of up to 180,000 visitors in 2012.
The funniest thing that has ever happened at an event
The funniest moment was seeing the crowd dancing at a party while one of my subwoofers was caught on fire at a party due to an internal electrical issue. They didn’t even bother to stop and put out the fire.
How would you rate other DJs in Kuwait?
On scale of 1 to 10 i would say 5. I see potential in some of the djs in Kuwait who are working hard to become professional and trying their best to take it to the next level.
What do you do outside of DJ-ing?
I spend most of my time producing music on my laptop and play ps3 in my spare time with family and friends and of course play sports.
What advice would you give to upcoming digital music artists in Kuwait?
14-all that i can say is Work Hard Play Hard. Never lose hope, be open to new things, listen to different genres of music and educate yourself, create your own tracks, practice and organize your music set.
